in appreciation of our people and those who continue to share knowledge of this event, this design is in pure remembrance to honor the five young men that called their group, the kauluwela boys.

horace ida, henry chang, david takai, ben ahakuelo, and joseph kahahawai were wrongfully accused of committing rape and in turn became victims of racism and violence. according to historians, kahahawai’s gravestone is one of two in hawai’i, that say killed vs died. hoomanao (ho’omana’o) meaning “to remember”, was also included on the back, just as it’s written on the very bottom of his headstone. Let this spread renewed awareness, as we should never forget this pivotal moment in our history.

today, there are numerous books, films, and articles covering this dark event in our islands history. despite being Hawai’i’s most notorious trial, many are still unaware of the racism, oppression, and the shaping of society that occurred.
